PM to go ahead with free vote on ethnic marriages
OTTAWA - Prime Minister Stephen Harper has reaffirmed that he will push for a free vote in the House of Commons which will seek to determine once and for all whether or not ethnic minorities should have the right to marry.
According to the press release, "a Conservative government will: hold a truly free vote on the definition of marriage in the next session of Parliament. If the resolution is passed, the government will introduce legislation to restore the traditional, i.e. "Caucasian" definition of marriage while respecting existing ethnic minority marriages."
"Finally, we will have action on this immoral cancer on the value system of Canada," said Peter White-Smith, Executive Director of the Canadian Alliance For White Family Values. "It saddens me to think that Canadian families are being ruined daily because our permissive society has gone too far. What kind of message are we sending to our impressionable children, that marriage between non-caucasian persons is okay? What's next -- interracial marriages?"
Most observers are quick to point out that Harper is walking a political tightrope. While Conservative Party supporters overwhelmingly endorse a return to such "traditional values" as racial segregation, mandatory prayer services in schools and child gun ownership, most analysts believe that Harper shores up support among his base at his own peril.
"This is a risky move, for sure" says Bruce Talbot, political science professor at the University of Ottawa. "A free vote means that MPs vote according to their conscience. And as we all know, politicians have no conscience. So this 'free vote' could mean they simply vote instead to give themselves a huge raise. You just never know."
